: (2013) Card. Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936. : (1885) Fr. Simeon Lourdel, together with Fr. Pierre Giraud, left Bukune Mission (Our Lady of Djiwe la Singa) in Tanganyika (between Mwanza and Tabora), in view of returning to Buganda where he arrived, together with Bro. Amans and Fr. Pierre Giraud in July 1885 and settled at Nalukolongo. After their departure from Bukune, the mission, which Mapeera had started in April 1884, was closed.

(1877) Ordination of Fr. Simeon Lourdel Mapeera, in Algiers, Algeria. We pray for all the priests serving in Uganda that, at the example of Mapeera, the first catholic priest in this country, they may completely dedicate their lives to spreading the Glory of God and building His Kingdom. (2005): 13th Death Anniversary of Pope John Paul II. He was buried on the 8th April in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome.

(1899) Arrest of Kabaka Mwanga and Omukama Kabalega; the two were later taken in exile to Seychelles Islands. Mwanga died there in May 1903 and his body was brought back to Uganda I August 1901; Kabalega came back to Uganda in 1923 and died on the 6th April 1923 at Jinja on the way back to Bunyoro.

(1878) Fr. Simeon Lourdel (Mapeera) wrote his last will in which he clearly stated the reason why he was coming to this part of Africa: “Spreading the glory of God by expanding the kingdom of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the hearts and minds of the people.”

(1878) Departure from Algiers of the first group of ten Missionaries for East Africa destined to Tanganyika and Uganda. (1966): Erection of Kabale Diocese, being separated from Mbarara Diocese. Bishop Gervase Nkalanga of Bukoba Diocese, a native of Tanzania was appointed its Apostolic Administrator. Mapeera-Nabulagala Parish and Namugongo Martyrs Shrine: Monthly Mass to pray for the cause of the beatification of Mapeera and Amans at 6.00pm.

(1991) 28th Death Anniversary of Emmanuel Cardinal K. Nsubuga, a great devotee to the pioneer missionaries, especially Fr. Simeon Lourdel Mapeera. He died in Cologne, Germany, and his body was brought back to Uganda on 26th April and was buried at Nalukolongo Mapeera Bakateyamba Home on the 29th April 1991.
